Did you know? Unlike many other songbirds in North America, both the male and female cardinals can sing.
Usually, only a male songbird is capable of singing. On a related note, when a female cardinal sings from the
nest, it usually means she’s telling the male she needs more food.
It's been a while since I've been able to sit back and take a photograph of one of these guys - they're one
of my favorite songbirds. I grew up with a pair of them in my backyard - every day without fail, the female
would attack her reflection in my window or perch there and talk to herself while her mate ignored
her shenanigans.
This handsome little guy also almost got me left behind at the zoo. I have a bad habit of stopping to
photograph things without warning the husband...oops. I ended up following him all over the red
panda enclosure...too bad the shots I had of him drinking were nowhere near as nice-looking as
this one.
