A U.S. Army Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (M984 A4 recovery vehicle) provides security
during a stop on a convoy in Wanake Valley, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Sep. 3, 2011. The
convoy was part of an operation in which Soldiers of Combined Task Force Viper conducted a
search-and-seizure to locate members of the Taliban in Wanake Valley. (U.S. Army photo by
Spc. Kristina Truluck/Released)

That's an outstanding photo of a vehicle I didn't know existed.

You have the gift.

Thanks!  My husband had to help out with the majority of their names.

Hey my sister-in-law helps make the engines that go in these. I got to see some up close when we toured at the CAT plant where she works for her company picnic this spring.

I like the low light level with the illumination of the vehicle lights and mountains in the distance. Great shot!

I'm guessing those are Albanian SF, using borrowed U.S. vehicles. Would explain the DShKs and Albanian-ish looking flags.

Something like that?

Yes, I believe they were Albanians. They brought a few of their vehicles to that mission as well.

Excellent shot again!
Before I read your notes, I felt there was a kind of "menace" to this shot - due to the use of differential focus I guess. I can imagine the guys inside the truck just waiting for the action to start.
I wonder how this would be in B&W? Maybe with a slight vignette?

The depth of field and focus, as well as a neat vehicle make for a great focal point of the image. The fact that it isn't the only object really makes this seem more genuine. It's a pretty good image overall!

Not yet!
Only bugs I've seen are inch-long praying mantis-like ants, flies by the millions, and this giant mole cricket thing that bit me when I picked it up.

I'm still trying to find the infamous camel spiders. A buddy claimed he saw one in the bathroom and it would rear up at him every time he got close, but I'm not too sure about that, I'd have to see it for myself, haha.

Nice. Bugs are pretty neat. Are there any other animals there? There's got to be reptiles and birds and such.

They'd be awesome if I had a maco lens, but I don't have one yet. Unfortunately, there's no animals around this FOB- too much foot traffic. It'll be better once I get more missions outside the wire. There's be some nice scenery and plenty of weed fields. xD

Weed fields are still awesome though! You never know, you might get lucky and capture an Afghanistan Yeti or something! Ask a hubby or family for one for Christmas! Maybe the wish will come true!

All you need is a bomb suit, tape some goat fur and have the biggest guy go strolling through camp. Get video and pics, because I would want to see it!

The convoy ended up getting stopped that day, so the HEMTTs were used as tables as we shared chai and some kind of fried eggplant with the Afghanistan Border Police. And it's MUCH more comfortable to sleep on than the inside of a MATV or MRAP. xD
