Forest Haven was one of the most deadly mental institutions in the US. Adults and children alike were strapped down in cribs. Patients' teeth were rotting out from stomach acids due to asphyxiation. Patients were abused and raped almost daily. The facility had a handful of workers for hundreds of mentally ill patients. According to one person, the only way to get out of Forest Haven was to die...so no one really left the place.

My second son having lived in a wonderful group home for the past sixteen years, I grieve at the systematic neglect and cruelty and rejoice at how far we have come. I grieve, too, for the staff, and what this place did to them. Even under the best of circumstances it's a burn-out job. To work in a human warehouse like this would be nearly as bad as being confined here.
