U.S. Army Soldiers from 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment gather for a group photo at Shele
Kalay, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Jan. 17, 2012. (U.S. Army photo by Spc. Kristina Truluck/Released)

The 'stache shot for the Battalion Command Sargent Major (because he hates them =D).

My military imagery is available for public domain. As the photographer, I don't have control over
how you may use it, but I ask that it be done with respect to the individuals represented here.

I have a question:
Is there a specific training to become the photographer, or go they kinda just hand you the camera?

There's a school for it, but some instructor teams go above and beyond in training their students skills outside of the basic combat camera training.

That's pretty interesting. I hope to one day join the military (because my dad is in the Air Force) as a photographer, but I'm not too sure. If I am a normal marine, can I carry my own camera?

Yes you can.  Marines and Army are the only branches that have combat camera now - Navy and Air Force have blended their combat cameramen into public affairs and multimedia jobs.

They have jobs for this? Woah! Learn something new everyday! How much do you get payed?

Oh yeah.  Best job in the world!
We don't get paid nearly enough, haha.  It depends on your rank, time in service, whether you're active or reserve, have dependents, etc.  The Military Pay website breaks it down real well.

The one pointing at his real 'stache x.D
I really nice shot!
I really like to imagine how much you guys stick together
And this one is really funny!
I don't know really much about military life but I like to think about it a lot.
What you guys are doing / did is really brave and I admire your guts!
Stay safe everywhere you go! All of you!

That was our JTAC.  Our Command Sergeant Major refused to directly talk with him (he used one of the other guys as a 'mustache interpretor' :lmao:).

Thank you so much!

More soldiers, more weapons, more fights, more wars, when it's going to end?!
we're in 2013, we are the most advanced creatures on this bloody planet, yet we still fight each other like animals (no offence).
nice picture though, hope you're home by now.

I love those guys, if you need something blown the hell up you don't have to worry about the Navy getting cold feet about dropping bombs in an Army AO.
