"We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude." -Cynthia Ozick

A Soldier from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment "The Old Guard" carries a wreath presented by members of the Air Force Sergeants Association to be placed by the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Today is the day to pay your respect to those who have made some of the hardest sacrifices. There are not enough words to describe how lonely, heartbreaking and absolutely amazing it can be when you're thousands of miles away from all that you've known and loved.

To my brothers and sisters past, present, and future (and to my boys from 5-20th FINALLY working their way back home after a year in the suck) thank you.

First, I thank you for your service, hard work and dedication. This photo is a well-captured reminder of the ultimate sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.

I appreciate how you focused on the airman carrying the wreath and were able to get so close. Top job, ma'am!

I was actually fairly far from him, I just used my 70-300mm lens to get the shot.

Depends on what you call Freedom, if brought to you buy a gun with the word democracy attached to it !!! That's not freedom. Anyway, you just fighting for the filthy rich. And anybody who want to go into the army to be taught to kill, better be prepared to die as well. The people fighting the armies are the freedom fighters. The aggressors are the terrorists. WTF you doing there anyway?

EH, it's how America gained its freedom in the past. I have to disagree with you, though. Yes, the current war is political, but I've talked with locals who appreciate what we're doing, so it's not all for nothing. If we can stop one Taliban cell from robbing and degrading on village, I consider it a win for their freedom.

The war is a horrible and bad thing, but it is nice that the people who gave their lives, no matter what side they were on, are being honored and remembered.

I use to put the following on each of my comments.
Salute the men and women that have served in the military who have maintained the freedom that so many of us take for granted.
I should begin doing that again. This is a pretty photo that conveys so much. Thank you for submitting it. Great job.

I salute those brave enough to throw themselves head-on in wars past and present, even if they were aware they either will die, either will never be the same once they come back.
My deepest respect, and may they all rest in peace;they deserve it.
