Firefighting gear at the ready.
Memphis, FL | September 26th, 2013
Canon 5D MkII

If anyone follows me on :facebook:, you've also seen the colored version. This is one of the images
that I'm giving to the fire station to pretty up the place. It looks a hell of a lot better than old
underwear and dirty socks.

This is difficult to critique, because I think it is quite a good capture.

The contrast is perfect for black and white and gives the scene a sense of depth. It also really brings out the texture on the helmet and visor. You can really tell that these have been into the fray.
I also like the arrangement of the two front helmets, how the first sort of cascades back into the second one.

One thing that stands out for me as a distraction is the dark corner, it feels quite suddenly dark. The other thing I might change would be to make the furthest helmets a bit sharper (still definitely out of focus though)
What do you think?

Very cool!  I always think B&W shots add... hmmm... not sure... some sort of extra subtle meaning or emotion... or something to the scene.

If you can understand whatStupid Me! was trying to mean there...   =D

I think I understand it, haha. It gives the photo a kind of 'classic' and timeless feel.

Black and white takes a more direct route to the heart of the matter.  :)

The fire station by where I used to live has one of mine.  I should do likewise for the one down the street and around the corner.

I live about a mile and a half from where the two Webster firefighters got gunned down last December.

I don't know about powerful, just some jackets and helmets hanging up.  Though the flag is a nice surprise.  xD

A great shot.  It's nice to see objects in place in their normal environment not set up for the shot, simply taken.  Not a photo op, but real life of the men and women stationed at that fire house.  They'll keep that photo on the wall for the next decade+ knowing fire personnel (I'm a former firefighter as well).

Thanks!  I considered doing some posed stuff, but didn't want to get in the way just in case they had a call.

I think a colored version should be better, because in the first look, it's a bit hard to identify the subject of the photo (but when you know that your subject in those time is firemen, it come soon ;) ) But the angle is nice, and the three plans increasingly blurred give a nice effect.
